How to discuss the Orlando tragedy with kids

The recent murders in a gay night club in Orlando are sure to worry kids, especially if they watch the non-stop television coverage. There are ways to broach the subject, if it looks like children are agitated by what is happening.

Dr. Robin Gurwitch, a clinical psychologist and a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center and the Center for Child and Family Health, who conducts research on the impact of trauma and disaster on children, says, "Talking to children in the aftermath of terrorist attacks such as in Orlando can be a bit challenging and worrisome for parents. It’s often hard for adults to discuss. Starting the conversation is the first and most important step. Knowing the signs of stress and how to help children cope increases our ability to help our children and teens navigate this horrific event.”
